Formal charges have yet to be filed in a shooting that took place last week in Bandon, as the suspected gunman remains in serious condition in a Portland hospital, upgraded from critical the day before.
Two Bandon men were hospitalized following the shooting Feb. 21 in the bar portion of Lloyd’s of Bandon, 219 Second St. S.E. According to a Coos County District Attorney’s press release, at about 6:25 p.m. Feb. 21, Bandon police responded to reports of a shooting at Lloyd’s. They found Paul E. Conner, 37, and Monte B. Callaway, 47, both suffering from head wounds.
According to District Attorney R. Paul Frasier, Callaway entered the bar armed with a shotgun and fired shots at Conner, a bartender at Lloyd’s, striking him in the head. Callaway then turned the weapon on himself, shooting himself in the face.
Both men were alive when officers arrived and were transported to Bay Area Hospital, where Conner was treated, then released the following morning, a hospital spokeswoman said. Callaway, whose injuries were more significant, according to the district attorney’s press release, was transferred to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland.
“While his injuries are severe, early indications are that Mr. Callaway will survive,” Frasier said in the press release.
Wednesday morning, Callaway was listed in serious condition, according to a Legacy Emanuel spokeswoman.
Frasier said no charges have yet been filed in the case because of Callaway’s medical condition.
“Until he is medically stable, the jail can’t take him,” he said Tuesday.
And, the agency that arrests a suspect who requires medical attention will be required to pay the hospital bills, Frasier added.
“It’s up to Bandon, but they will probably wait,” Frasier said. “(Callaway) will have some tremendous bills.”
Frasier said police have interviewed four witnesses who were at Lloyd’s when the shooting took place.
The investigation into the shooting is still under way. The Bandon Police were assisted at the scene by the Coos County Major Incident and Crime Team, which includes officers and personnel from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Coos Bay, North Bend, Myrtle Point, Coquille Tribal, Confederated Tribal, Oregon State Police, the District Attorney’s Office and the Coos County Medical Examiners office.
Frasier said investigators believe several bar patrons observed the shooting, then left the scene. Of particular interest are four men who were playing pool in the bar at the time and were nearby when the shooting occurred.
He urged them and other witnesses to come forward with information and provide it to the Bandon Police Department, 347-2241.
An account has been set up at Sterling Savings Bank in Monte Callaway’s name and donations to help defray his medical expenses also can be made in jars placed in local businesses.

Conners cousin
I can understand coming from the other side how you feel but the truth is that my cousin was shot and for no good reason and that is just not fair. We are happy and lucky that he is ok but coming from this side it is hard to find sympathy for callaway.

Yes I agree people need to be suportive to familys in times of things like this and not judge a person, as yes everyone becomes a victim in these cases. If you don't know how mental illnesses like depression works, then keep your nose out of it and just be there to support the family. I remember him being a kind & loving person.

My Father may have devistated everyone with what he did that night including the family and friends as well as everyone else, but he is not the type of man to hurt someone in his right mind. We are all victims of this terrible incident and all of you should know better to try and keep comments to yourselves because it does affect us more than it does the rest of you. There are other people who do love my father for what kind of a man he usually is and are very sorry that everyone else doesnt understand the effect mental depression does to a person. Remember to help his family and freinds to try and move on with their lives all of you need to try and do the same instead of dwelling on situations such as these. Please from all the family
