Robert Miles Loftin

Feb. 23, 1927 – March 16, 2008

At his request, no services will be held for Robert Miles Loftin, 81, of Bandon.

He was born Feb. 23, 1927, in Portland, to Norville and Mazie (Martin) Loftin. He died March 16, 2008, in Bandon.

Robert was a lifetime Oregonian and moved to Coos County as a young child. After the Bandon fire in 1936, the family moved to Coos Bay, where he attended school and graduated from Marshfield High School. A few years after high school, he moved to Alaska and worked on the pipeline, returning to Coos County in the late 1950s. Robert worked for Columbia River Log Scaling for many years, retiring in 1989.

On Feb. 6, 1960, he married Doris Hawkins. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed hunting, fishing and working his cranberry bogs. Robert is survived by his wife, Doris of Bandon; sons, Mark Aaron Masterson and his wife, Connie of Savage, Minn., and Samuel Robert Loftin of Chimayo, N.M.; daughter, Libby Loftin of Chandler, Ariz.; sister, Versa Rydquist of Coos Bay; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Loftin.

Linda Rae McElgunn

Jan. 6, 1945 – March 17, 2008

Memorial services will be held at a later date for Linda Rae McElgunn, 63, of Bandon, in California. Linda was the last baby born in Hanford, Wash., on Jan. 6, 1945, to Doyle and Mabel (Carnes) Flohra. She died March 17, 2008, in Bandon.

She moved to Southern California as a child, attending schools in the Tustin and San Clemente areas. She owned and operated several flower shops there for many years. She sold her business and moved up to the Central Coast of California in 1985. She continued working in flower shops. In 1990, she moved to Hawaii, and was a manager of vacation properties.

She married Patrick McElgunn on July 23, 1993, in Princeville, Kauai. They continued managing properties until poor health forced her to return to the mainland. They settled in Oregon and in January 2003, they moved to Bandon. She continued to do flower arranging for friends and family. She also enjoyed decorating.

Linda is survived by her husband, Patrick of Bandon; daughter, Cynthia Middleton and her husband, Thomas of San Diego, Calif.; sons, Jeffrey Johnson and his wife, Gwen of Coto de Caza, Calif., Eric Johnson of Palm Desert, Calif., Jeremy Thompson of Rio Rancho, N.M. and Jason Thompson and his wife, Lauren of Fort Stewart, Ga.; sister, Bonnie Jo Whiteside and her husband, Richard of San Clemente; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Heather Bell.

John Wayne Melton

July 26, 1955 - March 19, 2008

A chapel funeral service with viewing was held for John Wayne Melton, 52, of Bandon on Tuesday, March 25, at Coos Bay Chapel, 685 Anderson Ave., with Pastor Don Berney, of New Beginnings Christian Fellowship, officiating. Cremation will be at Ocean View Memory Gardens Crematory, in Coos Bay with inurnment in the family plot in Siletz.

John was born July 26, 1955, in Portland, the son of Herman and Wanda (Collins) Melton. He died March 19, 2008, in Bandon.

John graduated from Esparto High School in Esparto, Calif., in 1973. He entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served from 1973 to 1977. He married Ruth Wolowicz of Pawtucket, R.I., and they had three sons. John lived on the Oregon Coast from Port Orford to Bandon while he conducted his business of making old-growth wood furniture and other products. John was extremely talented, creating and making one-of-a-kind wood products

He liked to fish, draw and paint pictures.

He is survived by his sons, John “J.J.” Melton Jr. of Coos Bay, Andrew Melton of Bandon and Alexander Melton of Pawtucket; parents, Herman and Wanda Melton of Siletz; brothers, Mickey Melton of Reno, Nev., Dickey Melton of Depoe Bay and Jack Melton of Bend; sister, Debbie Erickson of Portland; and one grandson, Karver.

Arrangements are under the direction of Coos Bay Chapel, 267-3131.

Walter A. Lively

Oct. 30, 1920-March 11, 2008

Walter A Lively, 87, of Bandon, died in his sleep on March 11, 2008, at his winter home in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Walter was born Oct. 30,1920. Walter will be remembered by his family and friends as an accomplished and generous man. One of his hobbies was working in his garage and shop. He was inventive and loved to make and fix things, and he could always think of a way to make something work better. Another one of his favorite things was traveling the country in his RV.

He is survived by his sister, Jane Teague; longtime companion, Fredaline Gibson; his sons, Larry and Joseph Lively; his daughter, Linda Dreisbach; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
