» Baseball team finally getting diamond time

The Bandon High School varsity baseball team split a pair of league games and dropped a pair of non-counters in recent action.

The Tigers were scheduled to host North Douglas in a non-league twinbill on Tuesday. Bandon is scheduled to play in a tournament at La Pine today through Saturday. Opponents include the home team, Mohawk and Cascade.

The Tigers are to host Reedsport in a Sunset Conference matchup at 4:30 p.m. on April 1, then will travel to Cascade Christian for a 4:30 p.m. league game on April 4.

The Tigers traveled to Crescent City, Calif., on March 22 and suffered 10-1 and 9-4 losses to the Del Norte junior varsity.

Hitting singles for the Tigers in the first game were Jimmy Mack, Gage Gant, Archie Garrett and Jake Helland. Garrett’s third-inning hit scored Mack for Bandon’s lone run.

Garrett started on the mound and pitched well until tiring in the fourth, when he was relieved by Keith Murray. Bandon pitchers walked nine batters and hit two. The Tigers made three errors.

Del Norte pitchers walked three and struck out 11. The home squad was error free.

In the second game, Mack smacked an RBI double and knocked in another run on a ground out. Jordan Siemer, Max DeVillers and Austin Robinett also hit safely for Bandon.

Murray and Garrett each had an RBI for the Tigers, while Siemer, Garrett, Robinett and Helland scored Bandon’s runs.

Connor Jackson had a tough second inning, but pitched well in his first start of the year, Coach Gary Chrismon said. Mack relieved in the fifth.

Bandon’s defense was a bit rusty, but catchers Helland and Robinett, and centerfielder Mack played well in the field, the coach added. The Tigers struckout five times and committed three errors. Bandon left 11 runners on base. Del Norte committed one error.

“The most important thing is we were able to play 14 innings and get everyone on the roster some innings,” Chrismon said. “We are only five games into this thing, and our goal is to get better every day.”

Bandon fell to 1-1 in league play with a 3-2 loss to Myrtle Point at Tiger Heights on March 21.

Siemer drove in both of Bandon’s runs with a triple in the bottom of the third. DeVillers added a double for the Tigers.

Myrtle Point took the lead for good with a two-run single in the top of the fourth. The Bobcats’ Kyle Davis struckout eight and allowed four hits.

Siemer gave up three hits and struckout seven in six innings for Bandon. Michael Bennett pitched the seventh.

The Tigers had three errors, to the visitors’ zero.

Bandon took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning and went on to defeat Gold Beach 3-2 in a league makeup game on the road on March 19.

Bennett struckout six and allowed six hits in picking up the victory for Bandon.

Siemer had two of the Tigers’ five hits and scored once. Garrett and Mack scored Bandon’s other runs.

The Tigers totaled five hits and committed five errors.
