Hillary: A been-there, done-that pro

It’s almost “put up or shut up” time for us Oregonians regarding the upcoming primary. We’ve seen and heard what Hillary and Barack have proposed and how each of them has done under stress.

And my vote goes to Hillary. Why? First of all, in her long and experienced private and political life, she’s come through unscathed, largely, I feel, because (like most women) she’s masterful at applied humanitarian pragmatism. And I feel that (again, like most women) if she can, as wife and mother, handle a family, she can handle a nation.

Frankly, I am likewise impressed with Michelle Obama, the wife of a “comer.” If not this time around, hopefully he will be our president in the future, after seasoning in the fires of political finagling.

Also, as proponent of universal health care, Hillary is stellar in her advocacy. While spending more than any other developed nation on health care, with dubious results, this country deserves to do better for its citizens. Hillary will again go to bat for the indigent and needy in this category.

When you get ready to send in your mail-in ballot, mark your vote for Hillary. She won’t let you down! Bob Dorsett

Barack will bring us together

I am voting for Barack Obama because I believe he can bring America closer to being a United States than the divided nation we are now. He plans to bring Democrats and Republicans together to work to solve domestic and international problems. He believes in bipartisan leadership. He also believes in negotiating with leaders of other countries with the goal of peaceful resolutions and responsible solutions to global concerns. I believe in him and I trust him.

Who is Barack Obama? Some of my friends state that they don’t know who he really is. One of my adult daughters asked that question: “Who is he?”

Barack Obama is a U.S. senator from Illinois. He lives in Chicago with his wife Michelle and two daughters. Before the U.S. Senate, he was a community organizer, civil rights lawyer and constitutional law teacher. He spent eight years as an Illinois state senator. He has more years in elected office than Hillary Clinton. He has successfully helped pass more than Clinton and McCain combined. He is a bipartisan leader. Obama grew up in Indonesia, Hawaii and Kansas. He was primarily raised by his mother and grandparents. He is a Christian. He believes in God, the Bible, American flags and pins. He has written two extraordinary books about himself and his aspirations and goals: “Dreams from My Father,” and “The Audacity of Hope.” The second book published in 2006.

He has been called an elitist by both other candidates. He is accused, with derision, of being one, as though that is bad news to you and me. I hope he is an elitist, since according to definitions, that’s exactly what we need as a president. The definition states an elitist is “the best part of society, something excellent, a good thing, a champion, wonder, one in a thousand, masterpiece, a good person, winner, best ever, worthy, hero.”

Appreciates support for fundraiser

A fundraiser for the eighth-grade graduation dance was held on Saturday, April 5. Despite the cold, rainy weather, the day was a huge success. More than $2,000 was raised for the class of 2012!

Thank you to all of the parents/grandparents who participated. A special thank you to the businesses that made the fundraiser possible: Vicki G’s Hair Salon and Day Spa for the use of their facility; Bain Insurance; Bandon Vision Center; Price ‘n’ Pride; and Ray’s Food Place. Thank you to the community of Bandon for your overwhelming support and donations. Thank you to Price ’n’ Pride, Ray’s Food Place and Wilson’s Market for letting us inundate you with cans and bottles!

We are so proud of how hard our kids worked and the outpouring of support they received from the community!

Acknowledge providers this month

A giant thank you, with warm appreciation, goes out this month to our child care providers, family caregivers and respite providers!

In May, we have the opportunity to celebrate the dedication and work of childcare professionals, caregiving relatives and respite providers, all of whom contribute so much to the well-being of our children, families and communities.

The month of May includes Provider Appreciation Day and Respite Awareness Month.

Provider Appreciation Day on May 9, the Friday before Mother’s Day, gives parents and guardians a special day to thank their childcare providers and to show how much they appreciate them.

Research shows that high-quality early childhood experiences can offer lifelong benefits for children, not to mention daily peace of mind for parents who have childcare they can trust.

A few suggestions for celebrating Provider Appreciation Day include flowers, a card, a handwritten note, a gift certificate or a remembrance from you and your child.

Respite Awareness Month is a time for family caregivers who provide short or long-term care to their family members to speak up about the critical importance of respite to them.

Community members and civic organizations are invited to raise their “respite awareness” and to talk constructively about how we can better support local caregivers and families in need of a break.

Employers and the South Coast business community are urged to recognize the significant contributions of childcare providers and all other caregivers, who support the work force in so many ways.

Let’s show our care providers throughout the lifespan of our families, that we appreciate the important and caring work they do!

Supports Bob Main for commish

I see that Bandon Mayor Mary Schamehorn is supporting Bob Main for Coos County commissioner. As past mayor of Bandon, I am in complete agreement with her. Bob Main is my choice, too.

I’ve known Bob Main since high school. His integrity is beyond doubt.  He’s smart. He’s honest. He’s a natural leader. I’m proud to call him a friend.

During a time when money shortages dominate our thoughts about county government, I can’t think of a better person for the position of county commissioner than a numbers guy like Bob Main. He has a bachelor of science degree in business administration and mathematics.

In his past county service, Bob has clearly shown his interest in helping the good people of this fine county. His first instinct is to work with others; but when he thinks that something is right he will stand his ground. I admire that. I also appreciate his long-time support of our right to keep and bear arms.

It’s time for a change. Please join me in voting for Bob Main for county commissioner.

Re-elect John Griffith

Please join me in re-electing John Griffith to the Coos County Board of Commissioners. He has common sense and honesty. These are what we need now more than ever.
