Artist reception at SAGE GallerySAGE Gallery in Bandon will host an opening reception for “Spirit of the Northwest” by Langlois artist Dawn Ferrari.
The public is invited to meet Ferrari and discover the spirit and symbolism contained in her “spirit dolls,” sculptures and paintings. The reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at SAGE Gallery.
In conjunction with the reception, SAGE Gallery also will present its first Art Talk of the 2008 season, presented by art historian Anne Sobbota. The focus of the discussion will be on Ferrari’s work and the style and symbols found in Native American works of the Northwest Coast. Both events are free. The show runs through May 31.
The gallery is located at 390 First St. S.W., upstairs in the historic Coast Guard building at the west end of Old Town. For more information, those interested can call 329-0103.
Art show at hospital
Works featuring watercolors, Brazilian Amazon assemblages, digital imagery and collages will be on display through May 23 at the Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center in Bandon.
The show highlights the works of the Coos County Collage Collective artists, along with Hazel Stitt, Arkus Rodrigues, Robert Graham and Ruthanne McSurdy-Wong.
Stitt, now in her 80s, paints watercolors, which depict the seascapes and landscapes of the West Coast as well as scenes from a lifetime of travels.
Rodrigues, in his 20s, constructs art from materials native to the Brazilian jungle, including driftwood, sand and stones.
At the other end of the “low-tech-high tech” spectrum are the digital collages of Bandon resident Graham, who works with state-of-the-art computer technology to conjure images of multiple universes. Other artists include Susan Lehman, Donna Cox and Dorothea Tortilla of Bandon, and Pat Snyder and Nan Forsberg Hammons of Coos Bay/North Bend.
Fiddling family in concert
Bandon Showcase will present “Everything Fitz” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16, at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. S.W., in Bandon.
“Everything Fitz” is a family band featuring the high-energy fiddling and percussive step dancing of four of Canada’s finest young musicians, according to a press release. With roots in the Canadian old-time fiddle tradition, the band’s unique stage show combines a variety of musical styles — everything from Celtic, bluegrass, western swing, to entertaining novelty tunes and choreographed step dance routines.
Julie, 19; Kerry, 18; and Tom, 15, are all champion fiddlers and provide intricate three-part fiddle harmonies as well as solo improvisations on fiddle and mandolin. Additional instrumentation includes Pat, 20, on percussion along with parents Pam and Paddy providing accompaniment on piano and bass guitar. An audience favorite is the award-winning step dancing routines performed by all four siblings.
“Everything Fitz” was the recipient of the “Best Showcase Act” presented by the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions at the 2005 convention held in Quebec City. All four performers have won numerous awards in both fiddle and step dance.
Tickets cost $20, with all seats reserved, and are available at Bandon Mercantile, at the door or through the Bandon Showcase Web site at
