The Bandon High School Speech Team will host a special fundraiser, “Sweet Mary, Madison, Clarissa, and Alex, a Sweet Speech Celebration” to be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. S.W.
Sweet Speeches tickets and donations will help defray the expenses for the team to send members Mary Lane, Madison Long, Clarissa Castaldi and Alex Sylvester to the National Forensic League tournament in Las Vegas June 16-20.
The event also will celebrate the speech team’s second-place award in the OSAA 4A/3A/2A/1A division at the state speech tournament last month.
In addition, there will be an auction including a painting by John Castaldi, a matted photograph by Tatiana Havill, a riding lesson by Madison Long, a pie by Jackie Brown and a sweatshirt by Bear Creek Creations.
Sweet Speeches guests will include three other students who also will attend the national tournament: Aloura DiGiallanardo, representing North Bend High School in humorous interpretation, and the dual team of Rebecca Patch and Jesse Prow, representing North Valley High School.
“This is an exciting time for the BHS speech team to send four of the 16 team members to the national competition,” said Coach Ellen Howard. “The team hopes to raise a substantial part of the $5,000 expense for travel, meals, motels, and tournament fees for this prestigious tournament.
“Sweet Speeches is the speech team’s opportunity to show the community members competitive speech events while giving the speech team members the experience of performing for a large audience,” added Howard. “It is always a surprising and delightful event. The introductions to the speakers are always a delight to watch, and great fun for the speech team to present.”
Speakers for “Sweet Mary, Madison, Clarissa and Alex,” will include: Mary Lane, with “Bad Habits”; Madison Long, with “Jacqueline” by Brian McAvera; Clarissa Castaldi and Alex Sylvester, with “The Princess Bride”; Aloura Diallonardo, with “Kick Ass Hare”; Rebecca Patch and Jesse Prow, to be announced; Madison and Corinna Warner, with “Mama Drama”; Larkin Madden and Craig Minkler, with “Literary Cannon Fodder”; Tatiana Havill and John Castaldi with “The Wizard of Oz”; Corinna Warner with “The Last Flapper”; Mary Lane with “My Name is Rachel Corrie”; Craig Minkler, with “Canned Hamlet”; and Amanda Wickstrom and Tricia Settle with after dinner speeches.
