George A. Barnes Jr.

A private service will be held for George A. Barnes Jr., 85, of McMinnville with interment at Willamette National Cemetery.
George was born Aug. 15, 1922, in Redwood Falls, Minn., the son of George A. and Alice E. Barnes. He died July 20, 2008, in McMinnville.
He graduated from high school in 1940 and attended the University of Minnesota for one year majoring in pre-med. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp and spent the next 20-plus years in the service, retiring in August 1962, from the U.S. Air Force at the rank of major.
He married Mary Josephine O’Connor on Oct. 10, 1960. They moved to Bandon in October 1962. He worked as hospital administrator at Southern Coos General Hospital until retiring in 1985. He served on the Bandon Planning Commission and twice on the Bandon School Board.
George volunteered at the Coquille River Museum. He enjoyed genealogy, reading and building wooden ships.
George is survived by his sister, Jane E. Bovee, of Duluth, Minn.; sons, George A. Barnes III of Neotsu, Geoffry A. Barnes of Kennewick, Wash.; Gerald A. Barnes of Sandy and William O. Barnes of Lincoln City; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, George in 1966; mother, Alice, in 1993; and wife, Mary Josephine, in June 2003.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Bandon Historical Society, P.O. Box 737, Bandon, OR 97451.
