Local lakes: Bradley, Floras and Garrison lakes are still producing some nice rainbow trout. Anglers are reporting success fishing spin bobbers with their favorite fly. Early mornings and late evenings have been the best times. Zac and Eian Pounder of Bandon reported catching two trophy-size rainbow trout at Eel Lake recently. Zac made a seat on his kayak so he and his son, Eian, can fish together. Anglers are reporting catching some slab-size crappie and bluegill in Tenmile Creek. Purple crappie jigs or nightcrawlers on a small jig head are producing best.
Local rivers: Fishing for fall Chinook salmon really heated up last week on the lower Coquille River. John Lane from Albany had the hot rod early in the week with several Chinook landed. Gary Frahm landed a 40-pound fall Chinook fishing plug-cut herring. Don Baum of Bandon brought in a 35-pound Chinook he caught on the lower Coquille recently. Anglers are also reporting a high number of jack salmon being caught. Jacks are juvenile fish that come into the rivers with returning adult salmon. They will return to the ocean for another year before re-entering the rivers to spawn.
We have been receiving good reports of fall Chinook entering Coos Bay. Curtis Palmer went 5-for-5 on Chinooks for his clients on a recent trip on the Coos River. Last weekend’s Rogue River Guide Association Fish Derby was won by Jeff Lottis. His fish weighed 37 pounds, 12 ounces. We are still receiving good reports of summer steelhead being taken in the Agness area on the Rogue River. Drifting nightcrawlers with a corky has been producing lots of fish.
Beaches and Pacific Ocean: Prowler Charters (347-1901) reported great halibut fishing at the Bandon High Spot last Sunday. The summer all-depth halibut season is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the quota is met. Last Thursday, an in-season regulation change was made that closed the sport cabezon fishery. The cabezon closure applies to boats only; shore-based fishers are not affected.
Area shellfish: A good minus tide series runs through Sunday this week. All clams and mussels are open to harvest along the Oregon coast. Crabbing is still excellent in Bandon and Coos Bay. Boaters are reporting easy limits of Dungeness crab in both bays.
Russ Churchill of Bandon won $100 last Saturday when his tag was pulled for the Bandon Crab Derby’s last $100 drawing. The final derby drawing for $1,000 and lots of other prizes is set for 4 p.m. this Sunday, Aug. 31, at Tony’s Crab Shack.
