The Bandon Tiger varsity volleyball team won a pair of Sunset Conference matches last week, improving to 2-2 and moving into a tie for third place in the league standings.
Bandon also gained some valuable court experience playing in a non-league tournament at South Umpqua on Saturday.
The Tigers were scheduled to host Coquille on Tuesday and are to play at Glide today (Sept. 25), junior varsity at 5 p.m., varsity at 6:30. Bandon hits the road to play at Gold Beach on Sept. 30.
The Tigers won six straight games in defeating Reedsport and Rogue River last week.
On Sept. 18, visiting Reedsport fell to the Tigers in a close match, 26-24, 25-23 and 25-15.
Coach Shani Pierce said, “Our serving wasn’t the best I’ve seen, but we played very well defensively.”
She went on to praise the play of Briana Valentine and Jennifer Torres, among others, and added, “We mixed it up some and used some back row attacks. We’re working on focusing on our goals and finishing what we start, and we’re seeing improvement in that area.
“We’re also working on ball control and placing the ball in the open court, rather than just trying to pound it hard. Better court awareness is definitely helping our offense improve. Our setters are communicating better, too, and we’re playing better at the net.”
Tiger stats: Valentine 12 kills, 6 digs, 2 aces; Torres 5 aces, 5 digs, 3 kills, 3 blocks; Grace Garrett 5 digs, 3 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace.
Bandon defeated Rogue River on the road on Sept. 16, 25-21, 25-11 and 25-13.
“We were strong at the net and I think we only had three service errors the whole night,” said Pierce. “We got off to a slow start in the first game, but pretty much dominated after that. It was a good road win.”
Bandon stats: Valentine 16 kills, 6 digs; Karli Crook 6 kills, 5 digs; Garrett 10 digs, 6 kills, 1 block; Jordan Tipton 20 assists, 4 digs, 3 aces.
Pierce added she expects the Tigers to continue to improve as the season goes on.
“We have a good core group that plays well together,” she said. “And that’s good, because every point, every win counts this year.”
The Tiger junior varsity squad, coached by Courtney Freitag, defeated Rogue River 2-0, then came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Reedsport, 2-1.
