Southwest Oregon Regional Airport will get a boost — a $1 million jump start — thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
It also means more jobs will be created for up to four months.
Oregon Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., announced Friday the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $1 million to the airport to complete construction of a new taxiway.
The bulk of the work on the taxiway is done, said airport board Chairman Mike Lehman, but the project has sat idle since last year when the airport ran out of funds. It was in line to get funding from the Federal Aviation Administration, but this grant speeds up the process.
“In a sense it’s much ado about nothing, but because of this grant, we get to start the work now instead of having to wait another year or two,” he said.
Airport Executive Director Gary LeTellier said the project likely would start within the next month and employ up to 60 people for three to four months.
