Southern Coos Health District will mark National Men’s Health Week with its 2nd-annual Men’s Health Evening titled “What’s in Your Toolbox?” from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 16, at The Barn in Bandon’s City Park, 1200 11th St. S.W. Featured speakers include North Bend Medical Center urologist Dr. Leo Kusuda and registered dietitian Stephanie Polizzi.
Kidney stones, prostate problems, cholesterol, weight control, genital concerns and testicular cancer are some of the topics to be discussed. Because two speakers will be presenting, a delicious evening meal is scheduled between the two talks. A number of displays by health and activity related businesses will be offered as well as a variety of raffle prizes.
Registration starts at 5 p.m., with the first talk beginning at 5:30. Polizzi’s presentation “Tuning Up Your Health” will teach ways to rev up your metabolism and get rid of that “spare tire,” according to a press release. She also will provide information on reducing the risk of heart disease and diabetes without a major overhaul.
Polizzi is an associate professor in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Science at OSU and a Family and Community Development Agent with OSU Extension Service for Coos and Curry counties.
After dinner and door prize drawings, Kusuda will present “Tips for Maintaining Your Pipes.” The talk promises to be informal and informative, the release said.
Kusuda received a BES in bioengineering from Johns Hopkins University, completed his medical degree at Washington University, then his urology internship and residency at Oakland Naval Hospital. Kusuda also completed a urologic oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Cost for “What’s in Your Toolbox?” is $8. Scholarships will be offered for those who cannot afford to pay. Those attending are asked to register by June 12 so meals can be ordered, but tickets also are available at the door. For more information call SCHD Community Health Educator Mary Kemp at 347-1601.
