Robert Melvin Dysart
Nov. 23, 1933-June 20, 2009At his request, no public services will be held for Robert Melvin (Mel) Dysart, 75, of Bandon.
Mel was born Nov. 23, 1933, in Tulare, Calif., the son of Elmer and Mary Elizabeth (Oden) Dysart. He died at home in Bandon on June 20 with his wife, Cheryle, by his side. Cancer took him unexpectedly. His final wish was to be cremated.
Mel was educated in Tulare. After graduating, he worked in numerous jobs before going to work for Dairymen’s Creamery in Tulare. He worked as a local truck driver for Dairymen’s for 36 years, retiring in 1992.
Mel enjoyed the outdoors and liked building things. His dream was to move to Oregon. In the year 2000, Mel and Cheryle came to Oregon and found their place in Bandon. Mel called it his heaven on earth, where he would spend the rest of his life. The couple moved to Bandon in 2001.
Once settled in their home, Mel said he was going to build his own life-size Western town. He proceeded to fulfill his dream, constructing 10 buildings around the house. His favorite was his saloon, in which he spent endless hours listening to talk programs.
He enjoyed feeding and watching the birds in the back yard. His pastime was collecting, including memorabilia of his idol, John Wayne. He also was a Confederate sympathizer who collected Confederate memorabilia. He enjoyed collecting anything that was considered antique from the Old West era. He also enjoyed watching westerns and action movies.
Mel is survived by his wife, Cheryle, of Bandon; daughter, Jessica Dysart, and her children, Samantha, Dennis and Alex of Muskogee, Okla.; stepson, Boot Hill, and his children, Nathan, Lukas and Ian of Pocatello, Idaho; brother, Elmer Dysart, and sister-in-law, Charlene Dysart of Tulare, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews in California.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Elizabeth Dysart; brothers, Virgil and Earl Dysart; sisters, Leaveabell Dysart, Avenil and husband, Jim Davis, and Beulah, and husband, Ed Ryman; sister-in-law, Barbara Dysart; and wife, Dorothy (Morley) Dysart.
Mel will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
