A headline in the police reports in last week’s Bandon Western World print edition regarding a vehicle accident contained an error. The headline stated the accident was a hit-and-run, which was incorrect. Western World regrets any confusion this may have caused.
Bandon police have updated information regarding that accident, which occurred about 12:01 a.m. on May 14 near U.S. Highway 101 and 10th Street.
According to Police Chief Bob Webb, the victim was laying under the right tire of a truck belonging to James Haga, 44, of Bandon that was parked at the Bandon Quick Mart parking lot. After leaving the Quarterdeck Lounge at 10th Street and Highway 101, Haga got into his truck and backed up, running over the victim. Haga then called 911, and Sgt. Larry Lynch responded to the scene.
Haga remained at the scene until the ambulance arrived. The victim was later identified as Cindy Kelly, 46, of Talent. No citations were issued.
“James did everything he should have regarding reporting the incident to police,” Webb said.
Kelly was transported by Bay Cities Ambulance to Bay Area Hospital, then transported to a hospital in Eugene where she was treated for trauma injuries and is recuperating.
Sgt. Lynch said his report on the case has been forwarded to the district attorney’s office. He added that a tort claim has been filed in connection with the case, but said he was unable to provide additional details.
The investigation is continuing.
