Kyle and mom -
Kyle Lawrence and his mother Jackie surprised Bandon High School cross country team members by attending the state meet at Lane Community College Saturday in Eugene. This is the first time Kyle has ventured from the Portland hospital where he has been recovering from severe head and other injuries since being hit by a car on Aug. 29 near Pacific High School. He is expected to return home within a week to continue his rehabilitation. Classmates were excited to see Kyle, who was a member of the BHS cross country team.

The Bandon Tiger girls and boys teams placed third and eighth, respectively, at the Class 3A state cross country championships in Eugene on Saturday.
Bandon’s girls brought home the third-place trophy after finishing behind private schools St. Mary’s and Catlin Gabel.
Senior Rachel Ledig led the Tigers with a 20th-place individual finish in 21 minutes, 22 seconds, while freshman Hailey Hewitson was 31st at 21:55.
Isaac Taylor and Michael Whitney paced Bandon’s boys, finishing 26th and 39th, respectively.
Coach Chuck McLauchlin said, “Saturday was one of those rare days when everything went right and everyone came home happy and healthy.”
A total of 38 Bandon High School runners participated in what McLauchlin called “a very successful season.”
“Most importantly,” he added, “we were reunited with Kyle Lawrence, who showed up to support his team. Kyle is coming home later this week. He looks great, and appeared about 97 percent to me. He should be back in school soon and, hopefully, graduate with his class in the spring. There was even talk about him doing track and field in the spring. What an inspiration!”
Lawrence was critically injured when he was struck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross U.S. Highway 101 earlier this fall.
Ledig said the team experienced an emotional overload when it first saw Lawrence on Saturday.
“We were warming up when we first saw he was there,” she said. “We went over and hugged him; we hadn’t seen him in about a month and a half. It was really great seeing him, but kind of overwhelming.”
Ledig’s 20th-place finish was her highest in four years at state.
“I think all of us had a great race,” she said. “And it was a nice way to go out in your senior year. It was one of the coolest things to win a trophy. None of us had won a trophy at this high a level, where it actually means something.”
Ledig hopes to study engineering or medicine after she graduates from BHS. She isn’t sure where she’ll go to school or whether running will be a part of her college career.
