Martial arts students from as far away as Sparks, Nev., competed in Coquille Martial Arts’ fifth-annual open tournament at the Coquille Community Center on Nov. 14.
The tourney also drew new competitors from schools in Salem, Medford and Eugene.
A CMA spokesman said that tournaments are important because they allow martial artists to see which techniques are of value to them and which aren’t.
“For many competitors, the tournament is where they learn to get their edge,” the spokesman explained. “Competitors who in practice are shy, find confidence; and those who are overly-confident learn to tone it down a bit. Then there are those who in practice never quite turn on the power, but when confronted with an audience and opponents unknown, suddenly show their mettle.”
That was the case last weekend for 11-year-old Kayla Houston of Myrtle Point, who placed first in three of her four competitions, including sparring.
She, along with Franklin Smith, Tianna Huffman and Jason Brant of Coquille, and Max Underdown, 11, and JJ England, 12, of Bandon, were all in the running for the best all-around martial artist award, based on the number of events they entered and their scores.
Smith received the honor, although Underdown tied him in points, but lost out because he had one fewer first-place finishes than Smith. England was only a couple of points behind Underdown.
Tourney results for Bandon
Underdown (black belt) — first place in traditional forms, weapons, sparring and team sparring; second place in creative forms.
England (intermediate) — first place in creative forms; second place in weapons and traditional forms; and third place in sparring.
