» Pedestrian killed on state Highway 42S

A Bandon man has died after being struck by a car on state Highway 42 South just outside Bandon city limits Monday morning.

Randall Earl Tourney, 49, apparently was walking on the westbound side of the road when a small gray sedan struck him at about 6:22 a.m., between Hennick’s Home Center and the Odd Fellows Hall and cemetery, said Oregon State Police Lt. Steve Smartt. Police said Tourney was wearing dark clothing and the conditions were dark. The vehicle, driven by Bandon resident Brenda Rae Wilson, 46, was headed west into town. She was not injured. Tourney was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said lived about a 1/2 mile away. The accident was the first traffic fatality in Oregon for 2010.

Troopers closed the highway, opening it intermittently to one lane of traffic while they reconstructed the crash scene. Police left the body covered with a tarp on the side of the road until Coos County Medical Examiner Kris Karcher arrived.

OSP, Coos County Sheriff’s deputies and Bandon Police responded to the scene. Oregon Department of Transportation workers directed traffic. OSP will do continue with a full crash scene investigation, Smartt said.
