A Bandon School District bus crash early Saturday morning sent a bus driver to the hospital with minor injuries. Fourteen high school girls and their two coaches riding the bus were OK.

Oregon State Police trooper Fred Dunlap said the crash occurred around 12:20 a.m. on Highway 101, about six miles north of Bandon.

Bus driver Sandra K. Klein, 60, of Bandon was taking the Tigers' girls junior varsity team home from Rogue River High School following Saturday’s games, an OSP press release said.

The bus was southbound, when Klein lost control on a curve at the bottom of a hill.  The bus went up an embankment and knocked down a sign, went back across the road and crashed into a guardrail on the northbound shoulder.

Klein wasn’t wearing a seat belt  and was thrown her seat. An ambulance took her to Bay Area Hospital in Coos Bay.

Some families picked up their teens at the scene and other students returned home on a second bus. Bandon Police Department, Bandon Fire Department, Bay Cities Ambulance, ODOT and LTM Truck and RV Repair assisted at the scene. The bus had significant front-end damage and had to be towed back to Bandon.

Praise the Lord all the kids and coaches were spared injury.

As a Certified Director of Safety in Transportation, I can tell you with almost certainty - SPEED was the cause of this unfortunate incident.

I would hope, in light of this, the bus driver will be relieved of her duties!
