The Bandon High School dance team, the Hotsteppers, placed first in the 3A division at a competition at Sheldon High School in Eugene Saturday and also qualified to attend the state competition in March.
The 14-member team danced to a routine they call a “salute to the unsung heroes of World War II.” The dancers wore sailor outfits and military green and danced to songs such as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Rosie the Riveter.” A portion of the routine includes swing steps taught by exchange student Diana Sekreta, who was trained in ballroom dancing in the Ukraine, according to assistant coach Gina Neis.
Coaching the team is June Hinojosa and assistant coaches are Sue Dodrill and Neis. The team earned enough points to qualify for the state competition, which will be held on March 19 and 20 in Portland. They also will travel to Dallas on March 6 for an additional competition.
“They did great, I was so proud of them,” Hinojosa said. “We have so many new dancers and they are so dedicated. They haven’t missed one practice and they work so hard.”
Team members include captain Alyssa Taylor, co-captain Jordan Chandler, Hayley Moore, Carrie Plouff, Diana Sekreta, Teri Straley, Dakota Bouher, Devin Kanne, Cheyenne Austin, Autumn Kreutzer, Jessica Taylor, Gabriella Busso, Angeline Busso and Alexis Busso. Team manager is Katelynn Neis.
